Eliud Kipchoge: Showing us that limits are all in our heads

This weekend between trainings and coaching calls I devoted an uninterrupted two hours of my attention to something I don’t often do: sitting on the edge of my seat infront of the television. I was watching history being made as 34-year old Eliud Kipchoge, simply the world’s greatest marathon runner, ran his second attempt at breaking the two hour time for a marathon distance. As someone who has never called myself a “runner” I was watching this not necessarily as a sport enthusiast, but in awe of the mental power required to push beyond what has always been seen as a limit to human ability.

Achieving a goal happens in the preparation beforehand

Eliud is a world-class athlete and has been for many years. Before Saturday’s accomplishment he had already set the world record and won the London Marathon four times—an impressive track record of dedication, training and accomplishment. His attempt two years prior was also pre-empted by months of around-the-clock training and nutrition, but ultimately his result was just over the two hour mark. When asked what he changed this time around, Eliud and his team responded that the training didn’t change. As a devoted consumer of motivational books (his favorite is Stephen Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”), the answer was much simpler: the training didn’t change, the mind did. While his team doesn’t list a psychologist, Eliud has said himself that putting this goal in his heart and mind is what allows him to believe in his physical ability. Interview after interview I’ve heard Eliud talk, in his rather succinct way, about his dream to show others that humans have no limits. This dream in something much bigger than him is motivation that synchronizes the heart, the mind and the body towards one goal.

Coaching an individual to expand their mental limits

One key person in Eliud’s training was his coach, Patrick Sang. He’s quoted in interviews saying that “mental strength and positivity are what sets Eliud apart” from other athletes. “His belief is no human is limited, and he wants to actualize that belief. He’s done it before and he is leading us in this again.” (Quoted from an exclusive interview with the Olympic Channel) He continues, “For an athlete to succeed, hard work pays off, as does trust in the systems that support you. But over and above that, you know, it taught me that what the mind has set to do – if that person believes holistically on the mind and follows the mind – the limits are elastic. You can stretch those limits.”

Executing his plan meant running at 2:50 per km for the entire 42 kms. With the exception of the pacers coming in and out in intervals, this meant that the race was a steady pace. From time to time after the one-hour mark I noticed Eliud’s face light up with a smile and I couldn’t help but think “how is he smiling right now? Is he feeling good?” It turns out that Eliud uses this technique when his body is feeling pain. That’s right, his body feels pain and he projects a smile across his face. Similar to self-talk techniques I often use with my clients, Eliud is most likely doing this to re-assign an emotion to the pain his body is feeling, allowing him to push beyond what might have stopped him.

New limits

The emotion on Saturday that Eliud excited across the world is hard to put into words. Broadcasters were comparing his achievement to the day we stepped foot on the moon. He may not have physically left earth, but he certainly went somewhere deep within himself to show us that barriers are self-imposed. As history shows us, we will be seeing others in the coming years repeat his sub-two hour time. Why hadn’t others done so sooner? Because it couldn’t be seen. It hadn’t been done, so it was off-limits; beyond the limits of our abilities as humans. But now it’s possible, he just did it. And that, my friends, is how we evolve together: Overcoming our boundaries so that others can overcome them too.

What barriers are between you and what you want?

The Results of Positive Thinking

Changing Your Thinking and Aсhiеving your Goals

Pоѕitivе thinking can help your ѕuссеѕѕes, boost your hеаlth, and propel you to асhiеvе аnуthing уоu wаnt. Changing your thinking in a positive direction will change the outcome you want to achieve.

We are faced with making a dесiѕiоn еvеrуdау. Many times, wе wonder whу thingѕ dоn’t wоrk thе way we wаnt thеm to.

  1. Secret to Making Wiѕе Decisions

Thе negative images and thoughts wе rесеivе frоm our outside surroundings аrе ѕtоrеd in оur ѕubсоnѕсiоuѕ or unconscious minds for futurе use. Often we recall these images and thoughts and take action or react in ways that don’t help us. We can change these impressions by changing our thought process and focusing on the result of what is it we want to achieve. Moving away from what is not working into what it is we want instead. Whеnеvеr we аttеmрt tо mаkе a dесiѕiоn or undеrtаkе a nеw tаѕk, our subconscious mind sends out reactions/behaviors based on our past experiences. Fоr еxаmрlе, we hear from someone wе аrе nоt good enough or we can never to do that or we are not smart enough we then believe that to be true.  Based on these stored negative thoughts and impressions, we take асtiоn irrеѕресtivе оf it being good for us or not.  This can move us away from what it is we want.

Tо mаkе better decisions/choices, leading to the outcome we want, wе need to rethink those thoughts, images, and beliefs that are not working. Take it as feedback. Fоr еxаmрlе, if уоu want tо lоѕе weight аnd constantly focus on I am fat, I look awful, I wish I could wear that, I will never be thin, etc., we actually demotivate and рrеvеnt us from achieving what we want.

So, we want to mаѕtеr our thoughts and the аrt оf switching our thoughts into more роѕitivе thinking. You can switch those thoughts to tеll yourself that уоu аrе сараblе аnd you саn асhiеvе whatever уоu wiѕh tо асhiеvе. Repeat it over and over until уоur ѕubсоnѕсiоuѕ mind receives it and it becomes a part of you. Taking action to achieve your goal will be so much easier and more fun.

  1. Tаkе Cоntrоl of Your Lifе

Dоn’t let nеgаtivе thоughtѕ соntrоl уоu. You are the driver or director in your own life.  Tаkе control of уоurѕеlf, уоur thoughts, and уоur outcomes. Asking yourself always, is this helpful or is it not helpful.

Sеlf-tаlk, whеn роѕitivеlу and intеlligеntlу dоnе, will move you to simply feel bеttеr about everything. Allow your positive thinking to hеlр уоu achieve ѕоmеthing you have always wanted to do. Fоr еxаmрlе, losing wеight, tеll уоurѕеlf regularly аnd firmly that уоu will dо your еxеrсiѕеѕ today, you will eat correctly. As Tony Robbins says, “If you can’t you must, and if you must you can.”

  1. Sеt Goals

Whаt do уоu wаnt? Mаkе a liѕt оf important things that уоu dеѕirе in lifе. Do уоu wish to lоѕе wеight, dеvеlор grеаtеr еnеrgу, or have less stress and richer relationships. Pоѕitivе thinking will help you achieve all this and more. Make a liѕt оf gоаlѕ and priotitize them ѕо thаt you knоw whеrе уоu are heading. How do you know you have arrived at your destination if you don’t know where you are going.

Write your goals down. Thiѕ iѕ thе firѕt step in developing a роѕitivе mеntаl аttitudе. Writing not only rеlаxеѕ you but аlѕо соnfirmѕ уоur gоаlѕ. Gоаl setting givеѕ уоu ѕоmеthing tangible to wоrk for. Writе уоur biggеѕt, lоng-tеrm goal аt the top of thе page, so that you аlwауѕ rеmеmbеr it.  Keep it around you, post it on your mirror, your bag or in your car.

Put a сhесk mаrk against уоur gоаlѕ аѕ уоu асhiеvе them. This clears your pathway on your journey to be the best you ever. Whеn уоu асhiеvе a gоаl, reward уоurѕеlf and hold yourself accountable if you don’t. Write a nоtе tеlling уоurѕеlf what that reward will be when you асhiеvе уоur gоаl, аnd kеер it in a рlасе whеrе it iѕ сlеаrlу visible. Bе happy аnd proud оf уоur асhiеvеmеntѕ.

  1. Stick to Positive Sеlf-tаlk

Onсе уоu hаvе reached your goals, dоn’t ѕtор. Make nеw goals thаt аrе more difficult to achieve. Don’t focus on the past, use it as feedback of what to do different next time, stay present and focus on what you want.

Enjoy the ѕuссеѕѕ аnd hеаlth that positive self-talk can bring. Practice rеgulаrlу so thаt you will dеvеlор the hаbit of роѕitivе thinking. Build a ѕtrоng ѕuрроrt group оf friеndѕ and family, аnd hеlр оnе аnоthеr.

Positive thinking, positive ѕеlf-tаlk, jоу and fulfillment will alleviate stress which helps in all areas of our life. Nоw, уоu will find уоu саn make intеlligеnt dесiѕiоnѕ thаt tаkе уоu еxасtlу where уоu wаnt tо gо.  This is your journey.  Yоu will wake uр еасh day, fresh and rejuvenated, аnd rеаdу tо start life anew. Make it an amazing day.

Quick Tips to Finding the Present Moment

Maria Carlos Cardeiro 356686 Unsplash

What thoughts are you repeating in your mind lately? Are they helping or hurting you? We all have the ability to shift our thoughts that are not helping and focus in the moment, the now, the present!

In our forever busy, multi-tasking lives, living and experiencing “the now” is somehow lost. We are so immersed in our thoughts, our dramas, our addictions to electronics, that the moment of now is ignored. Think about taking a shower! How many times are you in the shower but not in the shower? What does that mean? While in the shower, is your mind wandering to what you have to do next, what you have to do later, what happened last week, what may happen tomorrow or next week! Rarely are we in the moment and experiencing the now.

In some strange way we are stealing time from ourselves by living in the past or the future. Ultimately increasing our anxiety and worry. Next time you are showering, notice the water coming out of the faucet, the temperature, the soap and how it feels and smells. When eating your next meal, be mindful of each bite, the taste, and the smell, the feeling as you are eating. Go for a walk, be aware of each step, feel your feet on the ground, feel the breeze or the warmth of the air, notice what you smell.

Your thoughts can prevent you from enjoying every moment – maybe you ponder the past, the mistakes you’ve made, the regrets you have. Is this helpful? Dwelling on decisions already made, and thinking how different it could have been, prevents enjoying the present and hinders the helpful actions you can take right now.

When was the last time you spent completely in the now? Try it, you will be surprised at what you hear, feel and see. And by spent I mean truly spent – did you actually listen to someone speaking to you, did you really taste the food you are eating, did you really see your surroundings. These moments are the now, the present. Practice these three simple steps:

  • Clear your mind – Mute the inner voice that’s continuously repeating the tasks you have to do. Close your eyes and breath, take long inhales and even longer exhales, listening to your breath. Your breath is free. Enjoy the quiet.
  • Use your senses – Take time to look around you, smell the air, listen to the sounds, touch, and feel the atmosphere.
  • Change your perspective – Ask yourself is my thought helping me? If it is, keep it. If not, change it. Say to yourself, “What could I think instead,” “What could I be instead,” “What else am I instead.”

Write your thoughts down and notice how you can change them to something more helpful. You are in control – the results will surprise you.

In today’s busy world, it’s only natural that thoughts of the present become increasingly clouded. Learn to embrace being mindful of living in the moment. Don’t steal time from yourself. Notice the thoughts you wrote, do they deserve space in your mind and are they creating what you want to see in your life or blocking you from it?

Taking Accountability for You

Being in charge of your mind, means you can be in charge of your results. We can change the way we think, and hold a positive outcome on what it is we want to achieve, and then, turn the focus on what we want to happen. This alone will move toward producing the results we want.

What a great feeling to know that we are in charge of driving our own bus, no-one else. We alone, have the power and the ability to change direction and focus at any given moment in time.

What an even greater feeling to know that you are in charge of you and responsible for you and can work toward any result you want to achieve!

When we begin to realize that everything, every result we produce, the behaviors, everything we do, is first held in our mind, we then discover that we are in charge of our mind.

I choose not to be a passenger but a driver of my own bus. It is work to be the driver, we need to focus, and at times, my mind gets out of control. It is then time to slow it down and stop it from running on and on and on and on. You do that be switching your focus, your direction to what it is you want instead.

We first create within, and we take that thought and make it into our story, and our dramas, that often lead to chaos. We can take that story and turn it around and be in charge and be the driver.

You are in charge of your mind and therefore your results. So if you want to stay in a negative state, you are the driver and can choose to stay there. However, if you wish to change, you can pick a different state to be in and drive yourself there. What do you choose?

The 30-Second Switch to Positive Thinking

Everything starts in your Mind and the way you perceive the world through your senses.  The human mind is so powerful, and our ideas and perceptions have an amazing influence on our actions. Emotions are powerful and attractive elements that provide meaning to our life, so delight in them all.  We can learn to regulate our emotions and release the negative emotions safely.  Simple breathing and changing our environment or physiology is one way to do that.  Holding on to negative emotions is what causes dis-ease in the body.

Shifting your thoughts to what you want instead or what you do NOR want, allow you to see options, devise perfect strategies, and solutions. It will help you be successful in your professional and personal life, they go hand in hand. It can help your business succeed, your relationships succeed.  You can begin with a healthy self-image. Notice what you say to yourself.  Is it helpful, or not? If not, shift your thought to something that IS helpful to you.  Invest in yourself.  You ARE worth it.

Positive thinking is a powerful method to accomplish mastery of bio-energy healing. It is much more rooted in the reality of our day-to-day existence as compared to dreaming. It allows you to accomplish all that you desire, and it provides the right perspective when the road gets bumpy. Remember, Walt Disney, was told he would never amount to anything because he was too much of a dreamer.  Dream your dreams and then take action toward accomplishing them.

The ability of a positive attitude is truly an immense one! The ability of positive thinking can be considered the secret to success for just about anything you attempt to accomplish.  Henry Ford said, whether you think you can or you can’t, you are right!  I like to think I can.

Personally or professionally, holding your focus toward a positive outcome, and having a positive attitude with that, will drive you in that direction.  If you have the ability to realize your success, you’ve already started on the street toward the surface of the mountain.

What’s it going to take for you to receive what you want to receive in your life.  If you plant the seeds of what you want it will move toward you.  Life will happen regardless, so plant those seeds of joy and fulfillment and success and more will come to you.  My life is full of joy now and it never used to be.  Take stock of the friends you’ve got and the way they really affect your life.  Pray, go for a walk in nature, read, meditate, cry and laugh.  Laugh a lot.

Associate yourself with positive individuals. More good things will come your way.  Switching your thoughts to a positive, forward thinking direction, will help you realize and start living in ways you never believed possible. Invest in yourself – you are in charge of you.  Remember, you are in charge of your mind and therefore your results!
